Question by miranda6382: Can I use old carpet to suppress weeds and grass, then put bark or slate over it?
I want to section off my garden and have part of it covered in bark. At present it’s largely mud, thanks to my dogs having worn the grass down and a lot of appalling North East England weather.

Can I lay old carpet as a weed/grass suppressant and then lay the bark over the top. I know a plastic membrane is advised but I am on the worlds tightest budget!

Thank you.

Best answer:

Answer by justme
Use layers of newspaper instead. It will eventually brake down into the soil as a compost and it works well to kill and stop weed growth. I use around 4 sheets of newspaper all over the area and then cover it with bark mulch.

Question by Mary V: How to remove shattered glass from shag carpet?
HELP!!! In the process of exchanging and storing the full storm door glass for the screen in prep for the warm weather — accidentally hit the door frame and it has shattered all over the shag carpeting and steps — scooped up what we could, vacuumed up lots — but of course, like sand — you never seem to be able to get it all? Any suggestions (other than eventually having to replace the carpet). We have pitched the Bissell — though it was a trooper — but didn’t want to take a chance of spreading glass throughout the rest of the house.

Best answer:

Answer by SID
try using a shop vac , it does not have a beater bar ! that prevents getting down futher on the pile !

we are in a small rental with indoor/outdoor carpet (or the same type that’s in offices) throughtout. i have a 3 year old who spills a lot. since carpet is throughtout, eating/drinking somewhere carpetfree isn’t an option. the regular shampooer doesn’t seem as effictive on this texture of carpet. plus, it’s a pain to bring it out EVERY week for all the spills which have added up. anyone know of a good quick, spot clean method for the indoor/outdoor carpet?

Best answer:

Answer by heartsonfire
I use white vinegar. I keep a spray bottle on hand which contains 1 part vinegar and 3 parts water. As soon as there is a spill, I blot up the excess liquid and then spray with the vinegar mixture. Then blot out the stain. It has been successful for everything that has been spilled on our carpet. The vinegar smell dissipates as it dries.

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) May 11, 2012

Restoration Local, one of the leading providers of water restoration services in the United States, is advising consumers to beware of flood damaged automobiles that may be showing up on used car lots across the south and Midwest following last year’s record flooding.

Thousands of cars and trucks were damaged by water as a result of severe weather events in 2011, and now, months later, many of these vehicles have been repaired and are beginning to filter back into the used car market. The problem is that many potential buyers may not be aware of the vehicles’ histories.

Many state laws allow vehicles to be sold with salvage titles, just as long as that info is disclosed to potential buyers. Some car lots, however, are not abiding by this law, which puts consumers at risk.

To avoid the risk of purchasing a car or truck with water damage, Restoration Local offers the following tips:

Check the glove box, below the seats, the dashboard, and trunk for signs of water damage, such as water stains, silt, or rust. Water stains are usually very well defined.

Upholstery and carpeting that looks newer than other elements may be a sign that they have been replaced. Discolored or faded interior material may also be a sign of previous water damage.

Turn the ignition key and make sure all lights and gauges come to life and are functioning properly. The airbag and ABS lights should also be functional. Make sure all electronic components work properly.

Check any wiring you can access and see how well it flexes. Water damaged wiring may become brittle after it has dried and as a result be prone to crack. Conduct a sniff test and see if there are any musty odors that may be the result of mildew.

As with any automotive purchase, take the car to a trusted mechanic and have it checked out thoroughly. Mechanics will know how to instantly recognize if there is a problem with the car due to water damage.

Ask to see a Carfax vehicle history report, as these usually provide a very accurate record of the vehicle’s repair history.

Since 2005, it is estimated that more than a million vehicles have been damaged as a result of hurricanes and other storm related damage, and many of these vehicles are continuing to find their way onto lots across the south and Midwest.

Based in Cleveland OH, Restoration Local is one of the leading water restoration providers in the country, with service in 30 states. They are available 24/7 and all work is guaranteed.

Question by woody007: How much will the apartments charge for carpet replacement?
I only lived here for one year and my dog left some poo stains on the carpet that i cant get off, and I didn’t pay any pet deposit. Is it mandatory for all apartments to change the carpet?

Best answer:

Answer by Allan C
I have never heard of the tenant changing the carpet. Usually the apartment complex will look at and assess the carpet to determine if it can be cleaned to a reasonable degree. This is done after you have moved everything out and handed in your keys. If the carpet is older than six years (at least in my complex) when the renter is moved out then it is automatically replaced, saving whatever we can for patches in other apartments such as flood damage or burn holes. I recommend having a professional carpet cleaning company with a truck mounted steam cleaner come and give you their assessment on the carpet. Ask them if they think they can get the carpet clean. If not, don’t have them do it, as you will be wasting your time and money. As far as the carpet replacement goes, depending on your location ( I’m located in the Midwestern United States) You can figure on about $ 10.00 a square yard, depending on the installers agreement with the complex and the quality of the carpet and pad it could be a little more or a little less, but $ 10.00 is a pretty safe estimate.. This is then deducted from you deposit check before it is sent to you. If the carpet is in reasonable condition then you are not charged anything for the automatic steam cleaning that takes place when a tenant moves out. GOOD LUCK!!!
