How to remove carpet underpad/foam stuck on concrete floor?

Question by YesSirBob: How to remove carpet underpad/foam stuck on concrete floor?
Recently moved into new house and putting new carpet in basement. When lifting old carpet, the underpadding/foam is stuck to the cement sub floor. The carpet lifts off, leaving pretty much 100% of the foam stuck behind. Any idea’s on way to fix this to make the foam lift off/easier to remove.

i would rent a floor scraper. you can rent one for about $ 20, or you can buy one for about twice the renting price. it’s basically a long handle with a razor blade at the end of it. it’s most commonly used with scraping linoleum off of concrete floors, but it should do the job.

you could, also, get a hand scraper or even a drywall taping knife, which costs about $ 5. the only problem with that is that you will be on your hand and knees…and it will take a long time! good luck

Powr-Flite Finds Demand for Efficient Floor Care Equipment Grows as Budgets Tighten

Powr-Flite Finds Demand for Efficient Floor Care Equipment Grows as Budgets Tighten

Fort Worth, TX (PRWEB) April 09, 2012

A February 2012 survey of facility service providers (FSPs) finds that the amount of money end-customers are willing to invest in floor care is decreasing. This was the conclusion of 57 percent of the respondents.

However, even though the funds for floor care may be decreasing, the majority of the respondents still believed that owning “good” floor machine s such as buffers, auto scrubbers, and burinshers, are “a critical tool” to have in their cleaning arsenal.

A “good” floor care machine, according to the majority of respondents, is one that is light, efficient, and easy to handle; a “bad” floor care machine is one that does not perform well and has a tendency to break down frequently.

Asked about the effectiveness and performance of today’s floor care chemicals, glosses, and finishes, 78 percent stated that the floor care chemicals available today–whether Green or conventional –are more effective compared to what was available a decade ago.

Other findings in the survey, which was conducted by Powr-Flite, a leading manufacturer of professional floor care equipment include the following:

Over 70 percent of respondents indicated that they use their floor care equipment primarily for scrubbing and stripping floors.

Fifty percent of respondents said they use their floor care equipment for other tasks, including burnishing, deep scrubbing, carpet shampooing, and spray buffing.

The vast majority of respondents select a black pad for floor stripping, while blue or green pads are the pad of choice for floor scrubbing.

The tool the respondents use most frequently with a floor machine is a wet/dry vacuum. (See sidebar: Changes in floor care, in their own words below)

As far as daily maintenance of floors, a majority of the respondents believe floors would stay cleaner for longer periods if they were given more attention on a more frequent or regular basis. Many cleaning experts agree with this, that effective, ongoing maintenance is key to keeping floors safe and looking their best.

Sidebar: Changes in Floor Care In Their Own Words

“Flooring has changed from soft flooring to more hard surface like wood, stone, and ceramic tile.”
“[We are seeing] more emphasis on just maintaining floors versus stripping and recoating of floors”
“[We are caring for] more delicate types of flooring in more temperature sensitive conditions.”

How do i transition from a new tile floor to an existing carpet floor?

Question by : How do i transition from a new tile floor to an existing carpet floor?
I’m going to install a tile floor in our kitchen, and will have to transition to an exisiting carpet floor. Currently the kitchen has linoleum, and where the carpet meets, there is a thin metal z-bar type of plate. When i install the new tile, will i have to pull the carpet up and attach a new z-bar type of plate? Or will i be able to pull the existing z-bar up and put something else down without pulling the carpet up?

Answer by Holden McGroin
Use regular tack strip. You will have to remove the existing strip and lift the carpet to install the new tack strip. Its easy and inexpensive.

What is an easy way to remove carpet from a wood floor?

Question by Tara P: What is an easy way to remove carpet from a wood floor?
I am wanting to remove a really old carpet from a floor that has wood underneath. The wood is in OK shape and I would like to not have to refinish it right now. The carpet is coming up fine but the backing is still glued to the floor. Does anyone have any suggestions to remove it other than lots of scraping.

Best answer:

Answer by otter7
Wow. When I did it, I just cut and tore, but your’s may need more help. Mine was glued to the floor on the edges as well. You may be able to add water to it and loosen the glue, but I did lots of scraping. Good luck on your project.

Vinyl and ceramic tile are cold, I want my floors to feel warm. Also, is there such a thing as waterproof carpet padding, in case the slab might get damp?

How can I remove carpet adhesive from a wood floor?

Question by Patty: How can I remove carpet adhesive from a wood floor?
I have recently decided to pull up my carpet and when I did I found I have hardwood floors but the people that put down the carpet before I moved in instead of using new padding used the old carpet and used carpet adhesive on the whole floor. We are having a difficult time getting it up. Does anyone know an easy way to get the adheisive and old padding off the wood floors?

Best answer:

Answer by omgithinkiknow
I recently did this on a set of wooden stairs in my home. My son purchased a concentrated adhesive remover from Lowe’s. I ran out and went to Wal-Mart to see if they had something I could use. They have two items there, the one I chose was OrangeGlo. I painted it on the stairs and left to play on the computer for 30 minutes(cure time), when I returned I fell flat of my back. This stuff is very slippery, please be careful! You will need a straight edge utility scraper for the stubborn places. My stairs are not complete, I will get back to them soon, but I will be more careful on the next try!

How do I remove rubberized carpet padding which is stuck to my wood floor?

Question by Gene M: How do I remove rubberized carpet padding which is stuck to my wood floor?
I removed my carpets in preparation to sand and refinish my wood floors however, the carpet pad which has a rubberized texture has adhered to the wood flooring and is very difficult to scrape off. Any hints for removing the padding without damaging the wood floors will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Answer by scaredycatdakota
Using your hairdryer on relatively low heat will loosen the rubber pad. You can scrape carefully as you go along with a plastic scraper. I have done this with rubber pad and carpet tape as well. No damage to the floor.

How do I prepare a cement floor for carpet installation? Do I need to worry about small amounts of adhesive?

Question by douglas v: How do I prepare a cement floor for carpet installation? Do I need to worry about small amounts of adhesive?
We removed old carpeting from our basement. It had been glued to the cement and though we used an ice scraper to remove most of the carpet foam there are spots where a slight residue remains. Do I need a special chemical to remove the residue, or will the new padding and carpet mask this?

Best answer:

Answer by jimpsonseed
I’m a general contractor (Masterpiece Painting and Home Improvement)from the Philadelphia area, and I’ve dealt with this situation several times. As long as the slight residue you are referring to will not make the new carpet padding bulge, then you should be okay. On concrete, you should use adhesive to adhere your padding or else the carpet will need stretched again before too long. Just use a 6″ notched trowel and spread it evenly with the notched edge. Also, the tack strip has to be glued against the walls instead of nailed in, unlike on a wood floor where nails would be used. Good luck!

steam floor cleaners….Do any of them work ?

Question by CLARKY SPOONER: steam floor cleaners….Do any of them work ?
I am looking to buy a steam cleaner for my hard floors at home, not carpets.
I have looked at Hoover, Bissell, Shark and a few more, they all appear to be made from cheap flimsy plastic….I have read reviews online about the Hoover Steam cleaner and am really glad i didnt buy one, they dont work !
Can anyone help me in finding a steam cleaner under $ 300 that does actually steam and clean.
Awaiting any replies whilst i scrub my rather large kitchen floor by hand !!!!! Yay.

Answer by Nessa
I just used the Shark Pocket Mop for the first time today. I have three, very often, dirty dogs and a mostly hardwood floor. It worked pretty well and would have worked perfectly if I read the instructions first and followed their instructions to deep clean with one side first then use the other to finish. I feel it is also very good for the price. It is 100% better and faster than the mop and bucket method!
