Any ‘family owned’ or small business type places would be great… but are they competitive with the Larger places like Home Depot or Lowes?

When we built our house, a contractor friend recommended Carpet’s Plus in Athens (Bogart) for our carpet and hardwoods. I’m not sure if they have other locations, but we were very pleased with them. We got Berber carpet for a better price than anywhere else we looked, and we went with their beautiful B grade hardwood because it was a steal (less than most laminates we had looked at) and it had some knots and worm-holes, which added character and made it look like real hardwood. Their customer service was fantastic, and the only complaint I had with them is they didn’t allow the hardwood to sit and acclimate to the house. They installed it same day, so there was some shrinkage in a couple of places. But the carpet installation went smoothly, and we’ve been very pleased with it.
